London Slalom Retreat, August 2009

Following the huge success of the 2008 London Pilot, and the Miami Slalom Retreat, a London Slalom Retreat Week will again be held in London, for 2009. This year however, it will be held in much fairer weather, and during the week running up to the international SkateLondon event.

London is not a fully residential retreat, however the Big Brother house for visiting skaters will again be Naomi's apartment. Provide supper for a night, and you're booked for the week.

Further to the schedule shown below, the week includes individual 1on1 video review and progress discussions with participants.

Dates: Monday 10th - Friday 14th August, 2009

Costs: £150 for the first 5 applicants, and £200 for the next 5.

Welcome session & consultations:

  • Everyone sits down together with a TV/Computer screen.
  • Individual history & level discussed, any competition or practice footage is analysed, and individual style and technical goals are decided.

Style Sessions:

  • Style goals are worked on, different focus each day.
  • Usually basic moves are used for adjustments in style, since it is easiest to make adjustments at this level, and the improvements transfer to more technical slalom.
  • Allows a relaxing start to the day

Skill Sessions:

  • New moves are learned.
  • One new move per person per day. More than this creates fatigue, and bad quality of learning.
  • The move is worked on and integrated with other moves.

Off Skates:

  • Review of any video taken of each rider’s improvement, to identify improvement, and further improvement to be made.
  • Style theory on how to achieve good posture/form, fluidity, smoothness, power.
  • Equipment questions answered and discussed.
  • Practice techniques for maximum progress.
  • Competition formats & judging.
  • How to put a combo together.

Combo & Practice:

  • The most relaxed session
  • Practice, combo making & fun.
  • Can include various slalom games for fun & improvement of slalom.
  • Final day, can include Mini Competition.
